Shazam is one of the most popular applications in the world, and it has remained consistently in the top 10 downloaded applications on both the Android and iOS app stores since 2013. While Apple didn't elaborate why the company acquired Shazam, it said the app is a "natural fit" for its music streaming platform. It is now unknown what the company plans to do with Shazam, only telling BuzzFeed "we have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today's agreement".

While no financial details were disclosed, sources familiar with the matter told TechCrunch that the deal is worth around United States dollars 400 million.

"We are thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple", an Apple spokesperson told The Verge.

Shazam in November had around 175 million monthly active users across the world from iOS and Android, with a market of 20 million users in the United States and 4 million in the UK.

Apple has also been rumored to implement music recognition for the HomePod, so we are guessing that Shazam will play a big role in that. Also, it is unclear whether Shazam will continue to be single app after the acquisition or whether it will get absorbed by the Apple Music., Snap Inc. and Spotify that have the existing partnership with Shazam. The app has been in operation since 2002, when users would dial a number, put their phone to the tune and Shazam would then text the title and artist to them.

Apple will now save the commission which Shazam was charging them to divert user to the iTunes.

The deal between Apple and Shazam, reported to be worth $400 million, was first brought to light by TechCrunch last week. With (Other OTC: WWTH - news) a click, the app identifies tracks playing on the radio, at parties or as background music.

Instead of closing the services of Shazam, Apple might be charging high for user diversion to Google. However, neither Shazam nor Apple have disclosed any information regarding the status of these partnerships.

Past reports suggest that Apple has been eying Shazam for years now, to use the technology for its own Augmented Reality initiative.
