Apple slows some older iPhones because of flagging batteries

Smartphone supertest: Apple iPhone X vs the Android competition Apple Says It Does Indeed Slow Down Older iPhones As They Age

That means the device will unexpectedly shut down to protect its electronic components.

The problem can be remedied by replacing the phone's battery. Apple had slowed the device by nearly 60 percent as the battery aged.

The revelation of the intentional slowdown has revived discussion on Reddit and other corners of the internet that Apple deliberately throttles phones with each software update to encourage people to buy the latest model - known as "planned obsolescence".

There's conspiracy theorists jumping with joy today as Apple confirms they have software to throttle the performance of older iPhones which is being seen as the end of the world, but lets take a closer look at this.

For years, iPhone users have wondered why their phone seems to go slow, compared to the newer models.

This is a pretty typical Apple statement in many ways, but it will be interpreted by many over the days ahead, and nothing can erase the "Apple intentionally slows your iPhone" headlines online.

The smartphone company claims the action is a measure to keep older devices functional, due to an issue with older batteries. "Couldn't figure out why, but just thought that iOS 11 was still very bad to me".

One solution to a faster working iPhone could be purchasing a new battery rather than an entire new phone.

The admission played into concerns that Apple was stealthily nudging iPhone users to upgrade to newer models by letting them think it was the handsets that needed replacing and not just a matter of getting new batteries. It will be applied to other Apple devices in the future.

Bogdanovich and Speas, represented by the Los Angeles-based Wilshire Law Firm, argued that Apple never asked them for permission to install this feature and did not give them the option to choose or bargain a way to turn off the feature.

According to Bogdanovich's complaint, he and other iPhone users never agreed to Apple's decision to cap the processing power of older devices and doing so lowers the value and functionality of the previous generation handsets. In a rare statement issued to TechCrunch, Apple acknowledged the benchmark results posted by users and said it's trying to avoid cases of unexpected shutdown.

Geekbench developer John Poole has mapped out performance for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 over time, and has come to the conclusion that Apple's iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2.0 updates introduce this throttling for different devices. iOS 10.2.1 is particularly relevant, as this update was created to reduce random shutdown issues for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

Apple said it wanted to "prolong the life" of customers' devices.
