Local newspaper reports said four of the terrorists have also been gunned down as they fought security forces.

Police and army troops summoned to the scene on December 1 killed all of the attackers at the Directorate of Agriculture Institute in the city of Peshawar some two hours into the attack, the military's press service said.

The attack, which is ongoing, reportedly injured 12 people so far.

"All of them were wearing suicide vests but they were killed before they could blow themselves up", said Salahuddin Khan Mehsud, police chief of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Mahsud said three attackers clad in women's burqas then reached the gate in a rickshaw and opened fire to clear their way to the building.

The area where the incident occurred is a hub for educational institutions in the city including the University of Peshawar.

According to Hayatabad Medical Complex Director Shahzad Akbar, six dead and 18 injured were brought to the hospital.

The university was closed due to Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH) holiday.

Police officers said that five people were rushed to hospital with injuries.

Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan has accepted the responsibility of the attack.

"I was sleeping in my room with my other colleagues", said student Zulfiqar Ahmad. Aerial surveillance of the operation was also carried out whereas armoured vehicles of security forces were also present in the Directorate.

Violence erupted over the weekend after police and paramilitary forces launched a bungled attempt to clear a sit-in, igniting fresh demonstrations in cities across the country, including in Lahore and Karachi.

The Pakistani Taliban have claimed a series of high-profile attacks in the country in recent years, the deadliest being the Peshawar school massacre that left 151 people dead, including 134 children.
