Parents are able to monitor a child's activity on the app, which looks similar to the regular Facebook Messenger app.

The idea is to make sure that parents have full control over the online experience of their children, and Messenger Kids is one such app created to open lines of communication along the way.

If you're interested in testing it out, Messenger Kids is now available for Apple products in the USA only. And the latest update about Facebook is that it has announced a new app for kids. More than two billion people use Facebook every month, while its other apps, like Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram, have billions of users. Rolled out in the United States for the moment, Messenger Kids is a stand-alone app that will be available on kids' tablets or smartphones but can be controlled from a parent's Facebook account.

But, only a handful of messaging and social apps - like Kudos, a photo-sharing app - are designed for younger children to use with parental permission and supervision.

He was joined in his criticism by leading children's society Barnardo's, which said the firm is targeting kids too young to use social media responsibly.

Is Facebook down? Is Facebook Messenger not working?

Parents must then sign off on all their child's contacts, meaning that in theory they can not speak to anyone through the app without parental permission. Facebook's move has already been criticized in some countries. "We appreciate that for now, the product is ad-free and appears created to put parents in control".

The child would not be given their own Facebook account, which is prohibited for those under 13.

"There are no ads in Messenger Kids and your child's information isn't used for ads". It is a chat app and named as "Messenger Kids". Facebook's safeguards have made it more hard for strangers to contact a child, they said.

"My advice: Until you see Zuckerberg's kids using it, stay away", McLane wrote in a public Facebook post. Facebook plans to release Android and Amazon versions next year. It also adds Snapchat-like masks and filters, including a "library of kid-appropriate and specially chosen GIFs, frames, stickers, masks and drawing tools lets them decorate content and express their personalities".

Until this year, even big tech companies had been loath to set up children's sites with a parental consent system lest they violate the law.

This is why Facebook as well many other social media companies forbid and prohibited the younger kids from joining.
