Instagram will now add 'Recommended' posts to your feed

Instagram users to now see ‘recommended posts’ in home feed New Instagram test adds posts your friends like into your feed

Now, as an Instagram subscriber, you will start to receive posts in a new section called "Recommended for You", even if they are from people whom you do not follow. As the company describes it, the new feature will suggest posts for you, based on those that have been liked by other accounts that you follow.

As expected, users haven't taken the injection of "recommended posts" positively.

This feature, meant to help broaden a user's reach to more content, comes a couple of weeks after Instagram announced support to follow hashtags, rather than just specific accounts.

TechCrunch reports that the feature is being quietly released after it was spotted earlier this month while Instagram tested it out with a smaller subset of users. Referred to as "recommended posts", this feature has not been well received by the users. There will be a label above the post that tells you is a recommended post which is similar to how they display ads.

Instagram already shows you recommended posts that are recommended for you. The hope is Recommended posts will boost the visibility of certain posts, as Instagram announced that 70 percent of posts weren't seen in 2016. Instagram said there is going to be five posts suggested containing links to stuff liked by accounts that the user follows. They can send Live Videos they are watching or creating, to users.

This is a major new direction for Instagram that causes the company to further deviate from its origins as a simple, chronological photo-sharing service and into a service that's much more heavily based on algorithms, much like Facebook's News Feed is.

Hashtags work like a charm on Instagram, they arrange the stuff, and you can search things by hashtags.

According to the SA Social Media Landscape 2018 study, conducted by brand intelligence organisation Ornico and high-tech market research consultancy World Wide Worx, Instagram is used by 3.8 million South Africans.
