Magic Leap finally unveils its first augmented reality goggles

Magic Leap finally reveals its headset: 'Lightwear' will go on sale next year Magic Leap Unveils AR Goggles

After a few years of promises and teasers, Magic Leap has finally announced its first augmented reality (AR) headset, the Magic Leap One: Creator Edition.

After a 3-year-long development process, we'll soon see the Magic Leap smart glasses with a 2018 release.

Magic Leap is calling its glasses Lightwear, the battery pack Lightpack, and the controller is called Control.

Magic Leap's AR headset is more like a pair of goggles that actually houses a powerful miniature PC that's akin to a MacBook Pro or an Alienware PC, complete with a GPU and CPU combo.

While Magic Leap has been staffing up with an army of software developers and creatives, the most-unique part of its offering is expected to be the headset's display.

Today, Magic Leap revealed the first images and details of the product it plans to ship in the coming months.

The glasses contain six cameras, with creators suggesting the headset be used for web shopping, browsing, for entertainment, and other uses.

Our lightfield photonics generate digital light at different depths and blend seamlessly with natural light to produce lifelike digital objects that coexist in the real world.

Magic Leap content ranges from games to music experiences to Oculus Connect-like digital collaborations so far, and these are being billed as "just a jumping-off point" for creators. It can accept voice, gesture, head position, and eye tracking input all at the same. Apparently, the company is also looking into adding prescription lenses to their smart glasses, allowing those of us with poor eyesight to experience augmented reality as well.

However, it seems that Magic Leap One will suffer a similar limited field of view issue as Microsoft's HoloLens as the company's engineers look to miniaturize the technology to match its newly leaked image. This line from the first hands-on with the headset, care of Rolling Stone's Brian Crecente, says it all. "That we could make a small wafer that could emit the digital light field signal back through the front again".

The company said documentation, tools and resources will be released to developers early next year.

There's still a lot of mystery to Magic Leap.

Obviously, Magic Leap will have more to share moving forward. The Florida-based firm has been known to be working on mixed-reality technology of some sort - the kind of thing that prompts all who try it to trip over themselves trying to find ways of describing it - but that's about it. It's raised $1.9 billion in funding from investors, including Google, Alibaba, and Singapore's Temasek Holdings. Similarly, Business Insider, The Verge, Engadget, CNBC and others wrote about the website, citing the alleged features.
