NASA's Kepler probe uses Google AI for latest discovery

NASA Readies Big Announcement on Possible Alien Life Alien-hunting announcement: NASA to reveal latest discovery this week; where to watch it live online
Delores Daniels | 12 December, 2017, 18:36

NASA has called for a press meet on next Thursday to show its significant discovery after searching for life outside our solar system.

The teleconference will be streamed on Thursday, December 14 at 1pm.

NASA often uses these sorts of events to make announcements from its Kepler telescope. The telescope's most recent biggest revelation was the discovery of seven Earth-like exoplanets orbiting a dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. This means they are the right distance from their neighboring stars to host extraterrestrial life.

In 2014, Kepler was set to another mission which included hunting for more exoplanets. This exoplanet-hunting confirmed the existence of 178 further planets, with 515 potential candidates.

K2 is also "introducing new research opportunities to study young stars, supernovae and other cosmic phenomena".

Three planets pass between the telescope and Kepler-11, August 26, 2010. The telescope has been instrumental in the discovery of 2,500 planets with approximately 2,000 more to be studied. Kepler-11, imagined here by an artist, is a sun-like star orbited by six planets. Later that year, NASA said the "unexplained and freakish behavior" was likely a swarm of comets passing in front of the star. Attendees include Paul Hertz, the director of NASA's Astrophysics division in Washington D.C., and Christopher Shallue from Google. He will be joined by Kepler project scientist Jessie Dotson, who works in NASA's Ames Research Center located in Silicon Valley, California.

Google Brain is responsible for research which helps robots pick up sand and teaches machines to be fair.

NASA's press release added that the discovery involved machine learning that "demonstrates new ways of analyzing Kepler data", but has remained cryptic about what the rest of the conference is going to be about.
