Why weren't the water fountains working? They also cited the closure of restaurants, the lack of functioning elevators, escalators and moving walkways, "leaving elderly and disabled passengers stranded". If one goes down, the airport can still be serviced by the other.

The city's response to the outage was complicated by the difficulties of fighting a fire that erupted in the electrical facilities that snake along tunnels deep beneath the airport.

Dr. Martha Brewer, an OB-GYN from Atlanta, and her wife were scheduled to fly to New York's JFK Airport to catch a flight to Barcelona.

Although firefighters responded to the fire shortly after it sparked around 12:45 p.m., it took about two hours to investigate and extinguish the blaze and hours more to clear the tunnels of noxious fumes, Reed said, before utility officials could inspect and begin to fix the damage.

By then, the fire was completely out. That was five and a half hours after firefighters had first arrived at the scene. Stores stopped serving food and passengers were evacuated to alleviate crowding.

When we were at the airport Monday afternoon we found people like Jasmine Renner, along with her son, preparing to go through the security line. LeBron, a freshman who sat out as a redshirt this season, and most of the team's other out-of-state players traveled directly home for the holidays from the bowl site. They wondered how long the outage would last and whether they should leave. Power wasn't fully restored until about midnight.

"It takes an army to communicate", the deputy general manager said, "and not everyone receives communications".

The control tower did not lose power because it has a separate electrical feed, and planes that were in the air and close to Atlanta when the blackout hit were allowed to land. At 7, the airport mentioned the fire in a news release.

He said that, after the casualties from truck attacks in Paris, London and the one on Halloween near Battery Park City in NY, terrorist now understand how to use a vehicle as a weapon.

But people still want information - any information.

"At one point, we were told there was a shuttle to take us to the convention center", she said. That brought the airport to a standstill and grounded more than a thousand flights. "Gave me some food vouchers and you know now i am here this morning", Duke said. "These protocols are established and practiced", said John Kinney, director of the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport in Colorado, who serves as the global emergency management committee chairman for the American Association of Airport Executives.

He told KPRC 2 that the Federal Aviation Administration requires airports to have backup power to keep not only the lights on, but the safety systems too. Some were on planes, but most were in the terminal.

The Stewarts' biggest hurdle was trying to get back into the airport and having to run to make their flight home.

A little after 1 p.m., senior airport management chose to mobilize its first response force and activate its emergency operations center. During those hours in the dark, thousands of travelers waited on planes or in the terminals.

Airport management and other responders made a decision to keep morning shift workers on duty, as the evening shift came on, to beef up personnel.

"We went on this attractive cruise and I'm not going to let that experience wipe away that lovely cruise and the blue water", she said. Some described sitting on a plane on the tarmac for hours. Williams would receive a text message from her brother, but she couldn't get something back to him.

The airport's challenges were of little matter to travelers such as Lorenzo Browne.
