Approximately 2,000 passengers are in line at customs at Miami International Airport due to an apparent computer outage impacting systems used by Customs and Border Protection at passport control, CBS News' Kris Van Cleave reports.

One person tweeted that Miami Airport is "total chaos" while another said the lengthy lines at JFK "are horrible".

An outage affecting the Customs and Border Protection's computer systems left global travelers waiting in long lines at airports throughout the country Monday night.

The outage is affecting other airports across the county, according to an official familiar with the situation. Acting Port Director Carlos Rodriguez of Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry said CBP officers "continue to make significant narcotic seizures by combining their experience with the use of technology and other available tools to accomplish the CBP mission".

The outage began around 7:30 p.m. ET, prompting long backups at global arrivals areas in places like Miami, Denver, Dallas and San Francisco.

Customs said in a statement that the outage did not appear to be malicious in nature

A spokesperson tells CBS News that Customs and Border Patrol has been contacted and are investigating.

"CBP officers continued to process global travellers using alternative procedures at affected airports".

Even modern systems such as the Amadeus Altea are prone to random failures, the website says.

Security remained the priority during the outage. No indication the disruption was malicious in nature.

The agency said it had access to the national security-related databases during the outage.
