Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo Jacob Zuma relents on inquiry into South African state capture

President Jacob Zuma appointed a commission of inquiry on Tuesday to be headed by deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo after a year of resistance.

South Africa's president says he is appointing a commission of inquiry to look into corruption allegations that have led to calls for his ouster and weakened the ruling party.

Kenyatta's discussion with Zuma will focus on bridging the balance of trade which is now highly in favor of South Africa.

Balton said the Foundation also hoped that the commission paves the way for prosecution of all individuals found to be guilty of flouting the law and disregarding the Constitution, irrespective of what office or position the individual may hold.

In October 2016, President Zuma made a historic State visit to Kenya which witnessed the signing of multiple agreements and Memoranda of Understanding in various sectors concerning cooperation in defense, investment, biodiversity and travel.

"The allegations that the state has been wrestled out of the hands of its real owner‚ the people of South Africa‚ is of paramount importance and are therefore deserving of finality and certainty‚" Zuma said in a statement.

He said further delays in appointing the commission would make the public doubt the government's commitment to dismantling "all forms of corruption" and entrench "the perception" that the state has been captured by private interests.

A scandal erupted after documents leaked to the South African press previous year revealed the close ties between his family and the secretive, well-connected Gupta's, who numerous allegations revolve around. Zuma's scandal-tainted tenure has eroded support for the ANC and he relinquished control of the party to his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, at an elective conference last month.

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation has called for the judicial commission of inquiry into allegations of state capture not to be interrupted by calls of broadening its scope, but to remain focused on President Jacob Zuma and the business empire of his controversial friends, the Gupta family.

"This matter can not wait any longer", Zuma said in a televised address to the nation.

"The commission must seek to uncover not just the conduct of some, but of all those who may have rendered our state or parts thereof vulnerable to control by forces other than the public for which government is elected", said Zuma in his announcement.

"There should be no area of corruption and culprit that should be spared the extent of this commission of inquiry", he continued, before adding that he expects everyone to cooperate with the inquiry".
