Michigan's minimum wage set to rise on New Year's Day

MINIMUM WAGE Michigan's minimum wage set to rise on New Year's Day

Tipped employees must be paid at least $5 an hour by employers.

A new year on Monday will bring a slight increase in New Jersey's minimum wage.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation - passed in 2016 - giving a minimum wage increase to workers employed by big businesses each year until it reaches $15 by December 31, 2018. And that is the same rate for smaller companies with annual gross receipts of $305,000 or less per year, after January 1, 2018.

The federal minimum wage has not increased since 2009 and the purchasing power of the minimum wage has steadily declined for decades.

"By moving to a $15 statewide minimum wage and enacting the strongest paid family leave policy in the nation, ny is showing the way forward on economic justice", said Cuomo.

In 2017, Ireland had the second highest rate of minimum wage of countries who have a minimum wage structure in the European Union, according to a report published by Eurostat earlier this month. The increase will be phased in over a longer period for workers in the rest of the state. That's why the Assembly passed sweeping changes to the state's minimum wage laws to help lift working families up - because far too many people are struggling just to get by.

"In many cases, our employers are paying beyond minimum wage", he said.

The statewide minimum wage will increase to $15 an hour for other workers, but on a different schedule than the one established for fast-food employees.

"The paid family leave requirements of New York State have taken money out of employee paychecks and have created scheduling challenges for employers in a time when finding employees is hard".
