PM battles plastic waste - but what about the rest of the environment?

All EU member states including the UK must have measures to curb the use of plastic bags by the end of 2018 All EU member states including the UK must have measures to curb the use of plastic bags by the end of 2018

The independent retailers' federation NFRN welcomed proposals to extend the plastic bag charge to smaller stores in England.

May says collectively these plans will "send a clear message to the public about the Government's commitment to be the first generation to leave the natural environment in a better state than it inherited".

The organisation also questioned why such a 25-year timescale was necessary for eliminating "avoidable" plastic waste.

She also said that the different types of plastics needed to be reduced.

Ireland is now the top producer of plastic waste in Europe, producing 61kg of plastic waste per person each year.

May said the measures outlined in the strategy demonstrated the "global leadership" role on the environment the United Kingdom was keen to take.

British Prime Minister Theresa May says she wants her country to be a global leader in eradicating plastic waste from the world's oceans.

As part of a drive to eradicate single-use plastic items completely from the United Kingdom, the Government will urge shops to introduce "plastic-free" checkouts to encourage customers to think twice about additional packaging.

He announced that the government deal with the "the throwaway culture that plastics encapsulate", a Whitehall spokesman said.

The government will also look at how the tax system or charges could further reduce the amount of waste that is created.

Prime Minister Theresa May will give a speech today (11 January) that will pledge to eliminate "avoidable plastic waste" by 2042 as part of the government's 25-year environment plan.

Pledging action at every stage, Mrs May said that she would "encourage manufacturers to take responsibility and rationalise the types of plastics they use".

Greenpeace called the omission "a glaring gap" in a plan that it described as "a missed opportunity" to tackle the UK's plastic problem.

A call for evidence on how to reduce the use of single-use plastics will begin next month, the government added.

The British Government wishes to become a leader in dealing with the plastics crisis and use aid money to help developing countries reduce plastic waste, increase marine protected areas in the United Kingdom and establish a "blue belt" of protected marine environment territories overseas.

In a question and answer session after her speech, Mrs May didn't rule out a deposit return scheme for plastic bottles, saying "what matters is what works" and she recalling a time when she used to return Corona bottles for a "sixpence". Small shops have been exempt from the plastic bag fee, unlike in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, where the fee has been successfully implemented across the board.

The Environment Secretary, urged to tackle the 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups the United Kingdom bins a year, matched the colour to his green tie.
