ANC asks Zuma to resign by Tuesday end

Down but not out- yet South Africa's embattled President Jacob Zuma has rejected a party request that he resign Down but not out- yet South Africa's embattled President Jacob Zuma has rejected a party request that he resign

This was not to be as a defiant Zuma dug deep, telling party leaders again that he was not going anywhere. Zuma, who has served as South Africa's president since 2009, has insisted on seeing out the end of his term in mid-2019.

A defiant Zuma told state broadcaster SABC that he had been treated unfairly by the ruling African National Congress, which had told him to resign by the end of Wednesday after rejecting his request to stay in office for several more months.

A press conference has been announced at the ANC headquarters here later on Tuesday. The urgent meeting started at 2pm on Monday and ended at 3am on Tuesday.

He will then likely be ousted via a parliamentary vote of no-confidence within days.

President Zuma was expected to stand down today after the party told him to resign yesterday.

Mr Ramaphosa, 65, said on Sunday the meeting was expected to "finalise" the situation. We do not want to divulge more as to what is transpiring there due to the sensitivity of the operation.

"The NEC will be meeting tomorrow to discuss this very matter and because our people want this matter to be finalised, the NEC will be doing precisely that".

Despite a growing clamor from opposition parties and signs that the ANC is losing electoral support over the protracted drama, divisions within the ANC have forced Ramaphosa to tread cautiously.

That meeting lasted less than an hour, with Zuma refusing to comply.

Zuma's nine years as President of South African has been marred by allegations of massive corruption and this has undermined the image and legitimacy of ANC.

The deputy in question was Jacob Zuma, who took over the presidency the following year.

The reported decision to "recall" Mr Zuma followed marathon talks by senior party officials that continued into the early hours of Tuesday.

In local polls in 2016, the ANC recorded its worst electoral result since coming to power with Mandela at the helm in 1994 when white-minority rule fell.

Minutes later, an unmarked police van left the compound as residents applauded police officers and hurled abuse at security guards for the Guptas, who have been accused by South Africa's top anti-corruption watchdog of influence-peddling and swaying the appointment of cabinet ministers.

Ruling party leaders outlined a speedy timetable, with Ramaphosa set to be elected in parliament to succeed Zuma in time to deliver the delayed state of the nation address on Friday evening. The budget speech, scheduled for February 21 will go ahead.
