Battle with militants rages in Jammu; 2 JCOs, 2 kids killed

Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) of the Indian Army engaged the terrorists as they targeted the quarters of the JCOs after entering the camp from the rear. The attack took place early in the morning, the attackers were a group of Jaish-e- Mohammed terrorists. Ministry of Defence Spokesman in Jammu Lt-Col Devendra Anand told waiting mediapersons outside the main gate of the military station late on Saturday, "in the ongoing operations in Sunjwan, the Army has killed three heavily armed terrorists".

Perimeter security will be strengthened at Army bases under six commands, the sources said. "In the early hours today after a brief exchange of fire with sentry on the periphery, some terrorists entered the family accommodation complex", he said. The 740 km LoC is under the operational control of the Army and 192 km International Boundary (IB) along Jammu is manned by the Border Security Force (BSF). Schools in the entire area around the camp have been closed by authorities as a precautionary measure.

Last year, Jammu and Kashmir police had claimed to have specific intelligence about a possible attack on a CRPF camp in Lethpora in Pulwama.

Jammu and Kashmir had been on high alert for potential trouble given that February 9 was the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru while February 11 is the death anniversary of JKLF founder Maqbool Butt.

Army helicopters and drones have been pressed to service recce the area, officials said.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also took stock of the situation arising out of the terror attack at Sunjwan Army camp at a high-level meeting of officers. Almost a dozen soldiers were killed when militant attacked the camp in 2003. The militants have been cornered in one of the family quarters, he said.

The spokesman said that the operation is in progress with extreme caution and restraint to safeguard the unarmed soldier, women and children in the houses.

Inspector General of Police (Jammu) SD Singh Jamwal told reporters in Jammu that "around 4:55 am suspicious movement was noticed by the sentry and his bunker was sacked upon". Shockingly, Akbar Lone of National Conference raised pro-Pakistan slogans which has been widely condemned by many including his own party leaders.
