So far, Winter Storm Mateo has already brought in up to seven inches of snow in Chicago, up to six inches in Milwaukee, up to four inches in Detroit, and up to 13 inches in areas like Havre, Montana, according to the Weather Channel's latest forecast.

Snow-related crashed snarled highways across southern MI, with one person killed when a semitrailer struck the rear of a auto stopped in traffic on US 23 near Flint, police said.

The winter storm blanketing Chicago has dumped almost 5 inches of snow in Chicago as of early Friday morning, but the latest forecasts are significantly better than yesterday.

Chicago Public Schools and hundreds of other schools in the region all closed Friday because of the storm, and Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport announced that cancelation of hundreds of flights, per the Tribune.

Slide-offs and crashes were reported on the roads early today in the Chicago area.

Almost 1,000 flights were delayed and another 1,500 canceled at Detroit and Chicago airports.

Chicago officials say about 6 to 7 inches of snow has fallen on the city and they're gearing up for three more waves through the weekend. More than 200 flights were canceled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Meteorologist Heather Orow in Grand Rapids, Mich., said Friday morning the storm is "generally going to be an issue for travel". Classes also were canceled in the city's suburbs. People should stay off the roads if possible and expect delays and hazardous conditions. According to NBC5, Saturday morning will start overcast and chilly before light snow develops late in the afternoon - continuing through late evening between 2 and 3 inches of accumulation.

Airlines warned of more cancelations to come at neighboring airports, and allowed passengers to change flight reservations without fees.

"Periods of heavy snow will arrive into Friday across the southern Great Lakes", said weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Belles.
