Despite several deaths, flu season still not at its peak

Flu killing 4000 every week and is responsible for 1 in 10 deaths in the US right now - with Tamiflu shortages reported Harsh flu season may break records, CDC leader says

Separately, 13 children were hit by severe flu and two of them died.

The death toll in future weeks is expected to grow even higher because flu activity is still rising-and the number of deaths follow the flu activity.

February is the peak month for the deadly illness - while flu season typically starts up in December.

"The match this year between what's in the vaccine and what's circulating is pretty good on paper, but sometimes in the manufacturing process, there's changes that occur even in to the strain that is made in the vaccine and that can cause a difference", he said.

"What I've been hearing is that they're busy", she said.

"The last severe season that we had, 56,000 Americans died from influenza".

"I might be scared of the flu, but I don't want to sacrifice fashion", she said. After that, the anti-viral medication Tamiflu doesn't work.

Scientists measure the spread and severity of the flu by looking at the percentage of doctor's visits that are for flu or flu-like illnesses.

"It's still going on", she said. There has also been an increase in B viruses (particularly in Western states), which may be more susceptible to the flu vaccine.

167 deaths were reported statewide as of last week.

State health officials say it is too early to tell whether the flu season has peaked.

The Maryland Department of Health detected its first laboratory-confirmed cases of seasonal influenza in November.

Lipsitch says we don't really understand why H3N2 is predominating this year but suggests that another reason the flu is bad this year is that while the vaccine is reasonably effective against influenza B, but it is not very effective against H3N2.

Some people think getting the flu shot puts them at risk for the flu, but that's not true.

Although the flu shot may not always prevent infection, it can still prevent serious life threatening effects and length of the flu. If you are experiencing fever, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, muscle aches and headaches, visit your doctor immediately, and take antivirals if prescribed. Symptoms usually begin one to four days after being exposed to the virus. Since then, reported numbers have ranged from 37 in the 2011-2012 season to 358 during the H1N1 pandemic season. "Now is the time to get a flu vaccine if you have not already been immunized this season", Dr. Gale Burstein, Erie County health commissioner, said in a statement. One of the concerns is parents sending their children back to school too soon tricked by what some people are calling the "flu fake out".
