The request for testing of the new project came from Area 120, a division of Google that works on experimental products.

It appears Google is working to bring its Smart Reply feature to a variety of messaging apps from third parties, not just its own services such as Allo, Inbox, Assistant, and Gmail.

According to a test sign-up form for Reply, the feature will be available on chat apps including Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, Android Messages, WhatsApp, Skype, Slack, Line, and WeChat.

"One of the many projects that we're working on within Area 120 is Reply, which suggests smart replies right in notifications from various chat apps", a Google spokesperson said. For example, if someone asks how long it will take for you to get home, the feature can give an estimate based on how long it would take for you to drive there in current conditions. Last month, Google announced the addition of Smart Reply within Messages for those users on its mobile phone service, Project Fi. This is a nifty feature that uses AI to scan the contents of your email, and based on that it will provide users with a bunch of different reply options that are appropriate to the email. Smart Reply functionality could save on-the-go workers time while improving collaboration. Not all Android Messages users are able to access Smart Reply.

Additionally, Reply can determine when you're driving and reply to any texts to let people know you're behind the wheel, messages that Reply determines are more important than others (such as "Where are you?!") can still notify you even if your phone is on silent, and vacation responses will automatically be sent out if someone tries to contact you and Reply sees that you've noted on your calendar that you're taking some time off.

Reply will use location and traffic information to help craft more specific smart replies, the announcement said.

Pegged "Reply", the feature would use artificial intelligence (AI) to suggest one-tap responses to incoming messages. The app is now only being offered to Android users as part of a test, which select people have been invited to. And you want to be there for people, but also for people in the real world.
