Japanese auto major Toyota has also announced plans for co-operation with Suzuki Motor Corporation to introduce electric vehicles (EVs) in India by 2020.

Tata Motors has showcased the new Tamo Racemo Electric at the Auto Expo 2018. The two vehicles are based on two new architectures introduced by the company: Omega Arc and Alfa Arc. Overall, about a dozen automakers have been targeting the EV space in the quest to fulfill India's goal to switch to electric cars by 2030.

The event also saw Mahindra & Mahindra unveil a wide range of EV concepts including, an electric bus "e-Cosmo", a two-seater electric pod "UDO", a lithium-ion battery powered electric three-wheeler "Treo" and eKUV100, India's first electric mini SUV.

"We are making a serious commitment towards innovation and investment in the launch of a full range of products that will connect with the aspirations of our customers", he said.

Actress Sonakshi Sinha raised the glamour quotient to an all-time high, at Auto Expo The Motor Show 2018 when she unveiled the iconic and awe inspiring "DC TCA". "It is a curtain raiser for electric vehicles.", Mahindra & Mahindra Managing Director Pawan Goenka told reporters.

Longer range electric vehicles and lower battery costs are helping them gain more momentum among consumers, Sen added.

Mahindra also showcased SsangYong Motor's new SUV G4 Rexton, which will be launched in India under a new brand name, and the TUV Stinger, the first Indian convertible SUV.

Tata Motors had unveiled their most ambitious concept, the Racemo at the last year's Geneva Motow Show. The Tiago EV and the Tigor EV draw power from an electric drive system developed and supplied by Electrica EV. Both these models are also scheduled to be launched in India in FY 2018-19. But what makes it special this time, is the unveiling of an electric version as well. India is the world's largest market for two wheels, with over 17 million bikes sold in the year ending March 2017.

The company also showcased its ethanol powered motorcycle, Apache RTR 200 Fi Ethanol aimed at reducing carbon footprint on the environment.

"The transformation to electric cars is inevitable in India", said Sumit Sawhney, who heads Renault's Indian business.

Hero Electric also unveiled eight of its global products in India, at the expo and the company said it planned to launch these products in a phased manner.
