A fake doctor treating poor villagers in northern India for colds, coughs and diarrhoea has infected at least 21 of them with HIV by using contaminated syringes and needles, a health official said on Tuesday.
According to an internal department communication, then chief medical superintendent (CMS) of Unnao district hospital Uma Shankar Dixit wrote to then chief medical officer (CMO) of the district Dr Rajendra Prasad after 12 people from one locality of Bangarmau - called Premgunj - were found positive for HIV after screening at the Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC) at the Unnao district hospital. The wife of a daily wage labourer, who stopped getting work after this said they suspected "something was wrong" when a large number of people in the village started falling ill, some with prolonged fever. "After speaking to the HIV-affected persons, the investigating team also found that they had received treatment from the same place", said Mr. Dohre. India has a severe shortage of doctors and it is not uncommon for poor villagers to seek help from people like Yadav.
India at the end of 2016 had an estimated 2.1 million people living with HIV, according to UNAIDS.
The news broke on Tuesday, months after the victims, including children, were diagnosed at a health camp organised by an NGO in November a year ago in Bangarmau city of Unnao district, reportedTimes Now news channel.
Yadav visited villages on his bicycle and treated patients outdoors.
"An investigation showed that nearly all of them had taken injections from one person". Kumar had allegedly used one syringe on all in the name of cheaper treatment.
"Villagers are ignorant about hygiene", he explained.
"Forty positive cases have been found".

'We ask HIV patients various things to know the source of infection, Choudhary said. After some time, a HIV disease can form into AIDS, a dynamic disappointment of the immune system that leaves the body open to hazardous contaminations and growths.
