Israeli UN envoy calls on Security Council to condemn Iran's activities

No ‘Russian option’ for Israel in Syria Israel shoots down Iranian drone, launches 'large-scale attack' in Syria that sees F-16 crash

The Pentagon also voiced support for Israel following an exchange of fire on Israel's northern border, which was sparked by the incursion of the Iranian UAV into Israeli skies and saw an Israeli F-16 crash in the north.

He added that Iranian officials are acting in Syria only as advisers and do so "at the request of the... legitimate and lawful government". Gradually this Israeli-rebel nexus has produced what the Israelis call a "safe zone" abutting their occupied territory on the Golan, as Nour Samaha reported for the Intercept last month. Russia, a staunch proponent of the Assad regime, expressed concern, encouraging both sides to exercise restraint. "Iran is dragging the region into an adventure in which it doesn't know how it will end", he said.

"We will not allow that regime to entrench itself militarily in Syria, as it seeks to do, for the express objective of eradicating our state", Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during a visit to Washington in December.

A huge explosion that sent a fireball into the sky near the Damascus global airport in April was blamed by Syrian state media on an Israeli missile strike. "Whoever is responsible for this incident is the one who will pay the price".

The chain of events on Saturday began at 4.30 a.m. when an Israeli Apache helicopter shot down an Iranian drone over the northern town of Beit Shean, the Israeli military said.

Meanwhile, Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon called on the Security Council not to stand idle "when Iran acts to dangerously escalate the situation in the region", adding that the council must "condemn this unsafe step and immediately end the Iranian provocations".

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said in order "to cover their crimes in the region, Israeli officials are resorting to lies against other countries".

In a major increase in tensions, Israel on February 10 struck a dozen Syrian and Iranian targets.

The planes attacked an Iranian control center in Syria, the same center Israel believes operated the drone which was shot down. Hezbollah threatened to attack Israel for a range of reasons, from energy resource disputes to the Israelis building a border fence.

"We consider it necessary to unconditionally respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and other countries of the region", it added.

In Washington, President Donald Trump's administration has backed Israel's hawkish stance on Iran, and declared containing Tehran's influence an objective of its Syria policy.

Al Jazeera's Zena Khodr, reporting from Beirut in Lebanon, said Saturday's confrontation showed Syria and its allies were no longer willing to tolerate Israeli attacks inside the country.

Neighboring Lebanon said it will file a complaint with the United Nations Security Council over Israel's use of its airspace to launch attacks on Syria.

Israel remains technically at war with Syria and occupies a swathe of the strategic Golan Heights that it seized in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed in a move never recognised by the worldwide community.
