Mattis: Trump wants parade out of 'affection' for military

President Donald Trump salutes as French President Emmanuel Macron his wife Brigitte Macron and U.S. First Lady Melania Trump watch the annual Bastille Day military parade on the Champs Elysees in Paris Trump tells Pentagon to plan military parade in Washington

A day after US Donald Trump ordered Pentagon and White House officials to plan for a grand military parade to honour US service members, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Wednesday have confirmed the news that America is indeed getting one.

It was first reported Tuesday night that Trump has been fantasizing about an armed march through Washington, D.C., since returning from a military parade in France last summer.

In response to the news, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that Trump had asked the Defence Department to "explore" the idea.

Trump apparently wants to display his country's military capabilities to Americans and to other countries.

"This is being worked at the highest levels of the military", a Pentagon insider told The Washington Post.

Trump has remarked that he'd like a US military parade to top the one he watched in Paris last July 14, when he and first lady Melania Trump were the guests of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte.

The DC Council tweeted on it's official page this morning that the schools are open, but the "Great Tank Parade" is "canceled". I think a lot of the world remembers the Soviet May Day parades and they still see the North Korean military parades around Pyongyang.

That same day, he would tell Macron, "We're going to have to try to top it".

Trump reminisced about watching France's Bastille Day military parade when he visited Paris in July.

Among their objections: Military parades have traditionally been the hallmarks of totalitarian regimes, appearing in the parade would be an unwelcome distraction for rank-and-file servicemembers and it would make it seem like the military is promoting the president and not serving the Constitution.

"I don't think it's a particularly good idea", Kennedy said. Another White House official "rejected the suggestion that some associate a military parade with strongmen, saying it would be a 'celebration of the men and women who give us freedom".

A military parade has been discussed since before Trump was inaugurated. "This is about the president wanting to honor the military", White House Legislative Director Marc Short said on MSNBC Wednesday. "To a large extent because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July Fourth in Washington down Pennsylvania Avenue".

Mr. Trump wants the parade to happen on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., the Post reports, although no location has been set yet. And the event would likely cost millions of dollars, with no clear plan on how it would be paid for.
