"Mr. Rahimi just stood here for the last 10 minutes and blamed everyone else for his actions", Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Crowley said.

A man who set off bombs in two USA states has been sentenced to multiple terms of life in prison.

Chilling surveillance videos played at Rahimi's trial showed pedestrians enjoying a temperate Saturday night before they recoiled in shock and ran for their lives when his pressure-cooker bomb blew up outside a home for the blind and disabled around 8 p.m. September 17, 2016.

"One thing a life sentence does is to make sure you don't do it again", Berman said.

Ahmad Rahimi reads a statement to the judge during his sentencing hearing in NY on Tuesday.

The first explosive threw a 100-pound dumpster more than 120 feet and sprayed hundreds of ball bearings and steel nuts that sliced through pedestrians' faces and legs.

Rahimi, 30, who formerly lived in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was caught bragging about his notoriety over a jailhouse phone during his trial, and he later sent a letter to a crony in Germany claiming that only "Allah will be my Judge".

Rahimi's attorney, Xavier Donaldson, said they plan to appeal. "You sit down and laugh", Nelson, 48, said. Earlier the same day, a pipe bomb exploded near the start of a Marine Corps charity run in Seaside Park, New Jersey.

Rahimi's father Mohammad, a naturalized US citizen, claimed he tried to warn the Federal Bureau of Investigation his son was at risk of radicalization two years before his terror attacks.

In recent court papers, prosecutors painted Rahimi as a remorseless terrorist who was basking in his newfound infamy.

Rahimi, an Afghan-born man living in New Jersey, was convicted of eight charges in October including using a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a public place, one of which carried a maximum life sentence.

"The Chelsea bombing was an attempt to bring our city to its knees".

Ahmad Rahimi, an Afghan-born US citizen convicted of planting bombs in NY and New Jersey. Asked why his client had not expressed remorse, he called him "a complicated person".

"Rahimi placed two ticking bombs in a crowded Manhattan neighborhood on a warm Saturday night", O'Neill said. "His clear intention was to take as many lives as possible".
