Qualcomm Snapdragon X24 doubles down on Gigabit LTE

Qualcomm Snapdragon X24 LTE: World's first Cat 20 2Gbps modem set to debut at MWC Can't wait for 5G? How your next phone goes supersonic in 4G

Launching a 5G device would bring in a lot of benefits to the customers like faster download speeds, faster Internet browsing, 360-degree video streaming, and of course, better quality video calls. On Wednesday, Qualcomm took the wraps off the X24, a new LTE modem that supports download speeds of up to 2Gbps. Qualcomm wasn't really offering us many details here, but my takeaway is that it's going to be down to the choices of its carrier and handset partners to decide which chip is the best fit for them.

The X24 will hit the market by the end of this year, when we'll see the first 5G devices starting to hit as well.

You future smartphone could be ridiculously fast even without 5G.

Even Qualcomm is quick to admit that early 5G networks will likely have their share issues, just as the first LTE and 3G networks did.

Well, apart from OnePlus, other OEMs like ASUS, HMD Global, HTC, LG, OPPO, Sony, Vivo and Xiaomi too have teamed up with Qualcomm for use of their Snapdragon X50 5G modem in their devices. For more details, check out the press release below.

The Snapdragon X24 LTE might not sound like anything to get the tech glands all fizzy, but it claims to be the "world's most advanced 4G chip" able to deliver frankly ridiculous 2Gbps download speeds. "We're excited to demonstrate these advancements at Mobile World Congress and showcase how our technologies are created to expand the reach of 5G NR to new industries, new deployment and business models, and new ecosystem participants".

The fastest available LTE modems, like Qualcomm's Snapdragon X20, are capable of reaching [theoretical] top speeds of 1.2Gbps.

Serge Willenegger, Senior Vice President and General Manager, 4G/5G and Industrial IoT, Qualcomm Wireless GmbH says: "By setting this major industry milestone, we're helping mobile operators fully mobilize their spectrum assets and maximize the capacity of their Gigabit LTE networks and allowing mobile device makers to offer consumers a preview of new services soon expected to be enabled with 5G networks". Last week, the company announced that its Snapdragon X50 would enter testing this year with carriers around the world and feature in 5G phones beginning next year.

It supports up to 7x carrier aggregation in the downlink, as well as 4×4 MIMO on up to five aggregated LTE carriers, for a total of up to 20 concurrent spatial LTE streams. This unprecedented feature set is created to allow devices that feature the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem to utilize all spectrum assets available from a mobile operator, whether in licensed spectrum, or with License Assisted Access (LAA). In the uplink, Snapdragon X24 supports Category 20 upload speeds, 3x20 MHz CA and up to 256-QAM. And while most of us have marveled at the 10nm manufacturing process that is used for today's flagship smartphones, the Snapdragon X24 is built on a new 7nm FinFET process.
