Suffragette100: Do you know someone who embodies the spirit of the suffragettes?

The struggle to win the vote was long and arduous, but in 1918 these fearless women won.

"On Tuesday I will be speaking in a Scottish Parliament debate to mark 100 years of women securing the right to vote".

Richard High, who works in the Special Collections department at University of Leeds, with the Votes For Women magazine.

In 1928, under the Equal Franchise Act, women in the United Kingdom were granted equal voting rights, increasing the number of eligible female voters from 8 million to 15 million.

"There is also more to be done to raise awareness of the role played by Indian princess Sophia Duleep Singh in the Suffragette movement, and there are many suggestions of gay relationships within the movement that deserve wider exposure, but the history of those times - so often written by men - was coy at keeping official records of them". "If you're going to give a legal pardon for things like arson and violence it's not straightforward".

But according to Helen Pankhurst, great-granddaughter of celebrated Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, their peaceful campaign should not be forgotten.

This is why Amnesty and the South Wales Argus, to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of women's suffrage in Britain, is calling upon readers to nominate incredible women who are working to make a real difference in their local community today.

"I think that it feels to the youngest generation a bit that they are on the shoulders of giants", said Helen Pankurst.

With the passing of the Representation of the People Act in 1918, the suffragettes were successful in gaining some women aged 30 and over the right to vote - only 40% of women were initially granted the vote.

"Suffragette activism was for a noble cause and many of them became political prisoners".

The occasion is being marked across the country and Theresa May will be delivering a speech in Manchester later today about the "heroism" of the woman involved.

The fight for women's suffrage was led by women made famous by their daring stunts, law-breaking and non-violent forms of protest, including Emmeline Pankhurst, Emily Davison and Flora Drummond.

However, as I began to research the topic more and read fist-hand biographies from the women who lived through the suffrage movement, I felt ashamed as to how little I knew.

On Wednesday 6 February, 1918, women were first able to vote in this country after women fought tirelessly to have equality within the voting system. "Convictions of Suffragettes were politically motivated and bore no relation to the acts committed", Mr. Corbyn said in a press release.

A specially-commissioned public exhibition featuring life-sized images of central figures of the suffrage movement was also unveiled in Trafalgar Square.

She called for greater action by social media companies to clamp down on abuse, and announced a review of the law relating to online offensive communications.

But unlike her mother and sister, she maintained a political affiliation, which for many years was restricted by the WSPU.

Labour's shadow cabinet met at the Museum of London, now home to an exhibition on the suffragettes.
