The first burst of an exploding supernova has finally been captured

Amateur astronomer captures a supernova's 1st light Amateur astronomer's 1-in-10 million discovery

According to the researchers, finding something like this which has been theorized but never observe is very hard with a chance of only one-in-a-million or even one-in-ten-million.

In this project, scientists move one step closer to understanding the exact set of circumstances that trigger the supernova explosion - that one moment in time. The galaxy is around 80 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Sculptor.

He took a series of short-exposure photographs of the spiral galaxy, accidentally capturing it before and after the supernova's "shock breakout".

It takes experience to be able to notice such a tiny but significant change, said Gaston Folatelli, an astronomer at the Instituto de Astrofisica de La Plata and one of the study's authors.

Buso quickly noticed the unusual burst of light in his photos and contacted an global group of astronomers.

The discovery and results of follow-up observations from around the world of the explosion, called SN 2016gkg, have since been published in the journal Nature.

"If we think that on average each galaxy roughly produces one supernova per century, and that a century contains almost 900 thousand hours, then the chance probability of observing the right galaxy at the right moment is not much greater than one in a million". Stars have charges and elements along with the colossal amount of energy stored in it. However, testing this theory requires the observation of the before and after moment a star becomes a supernova. It was only theorized and now, the study has proven the existence of this process.

Little did the Argentinian man know at first that he had captured an image that had so far failed to be captured by full-time astronomers: the first light of a massive exploding star. He further that Buso chooses a place that is humid and low flatland which is not an ideal place to conduct such experiments and said, Buso was lucky to witness such a phenomenon up close. He didn't expect to win the cosmic lottery - or to prove scientists right about a long-held thoery about how supernovas occur.

Structural and composition information captured in the very first moments of a star's explosion can not be obtained in any other way, and scientists were quick to train the Shane 3-meter telescope at the University of California's Lick Observatory near San Jose, California, and the twin 10-meter telescopes of the W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea, Hawaii, onto the expanding supernova.

On 20 September 2016, amateur astronomer VĂctor Buso had just bought a new camera for his telescope and wanted to test it, so pointed it at a particular spot in the distant universe to see what the images looked like.

Supernovas can be separated into two types. It is because of the color of the supernova which was yellow supergiant. Moreover, SN 2016gkg happened to be a rather ordinary event, which would imply that the observed phase is common to all supernovae, as models predict. The supernova's light curve may be able to reveal more about the material surrounding the star, which could help provide more insight into how stars in binary pairs pull mass off of each other - and how this relationship might affect a star's evolution.
