A majority of Americans say special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation is fair and should continue without interference, a Marist College poll reports.

While it's hard to peg an increase in the president's approval rating to any specific event, some news items over the last few months may have helped boost Mr. Trump.

Former FBI Director James Comey said Trump asked him to pledge his loyalty, Trump recently asked Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein if he was "on my team", and Trump also asked former deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe who he voted for in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Now that the special counsel investigation has reached the front steps of the White House, following increasing allegations that the president obstructed justice by trying to yield his influence to disrupt a probe that could determine Trump's fate as president.

Trump had a 40 percent approval rating, against 55 percent of respondents disapproving of his job, during the survey conducted Friday through Monday.

47 percent disapprove of the way he has handled taxes; 45 percent approve.

"Two in three Republicans say the Federal Bureau of Investigation is biased against Donald Trump". In a separate probe, 56 percent said the probe is fair and only 28 percent disagreed.

A slim majority of voters, 51%, say they approve of how Trump is handling the economy, his highest mark on this question since his inauguration.

The Economist/YouGov poll surveyed 1,320 registered voters between February 4 and February 6, and it has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percent.

The issue of immigration is not worth a government shutdown, 66 percent of voters say.

Quinnipiac University ran the poll February 2-5, surveying 1,333 voters nationwide.
