Tech giant Intel says unexpected last-minute "logistical challenges" forced it to scrap plans to launch hundreds of small drones that were to put on a light show as part of the pageantry at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

"The Olympics are a time when the sports and entertainment industries are buzzing with record-setting performances, so it was the ideal stage for Intel Shooting Star drones and our team to set their own kind of record", said Natalie Cheung, general manager of Intel's drone light show team.

"And while more drones does provide a broader canvas, it perhaps more importantly affords a better sense of depth".

"During the Ceremony, POCOG made the decision to not go ahead with the show because there were too many spectators standing in the area where the live drone show was supposed to take place", according to a statement from the Olympic organizing committee, Recode reported.

The Winter Olympics rehearsal surpassed Intel's 2016 Guinness World Record of 500 drones flown simultaneously in Germany.

Following the PyeongChang 2018 Opening Ceremony, Intel ran a 30-second ad spot featuring the power of Intel Shooting Star drones and their unique entertainment possibilities. You might remember a similar spectacle at Lady Gaga's 2017 Super Bowl half-time show, but that only involved about 300 drones. "But still, I do think the drone performance itself was very impressive".

"We are honored to have Intel drones playing several roles at the Olympic Games", Anil Nanduri, vice president and general manager of Intel Drone Group, said in a news release. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles themselves are fitted with LED lights to produce a virtually unlimited number of color combinations, with each 384mm x 384mm (15.1 inch x 15.1 inch) quadcopter weighing in at 330g (0.73lbs). The athletes, dignitaries, and spectators at the stadium in Pyeongchang never got to see the drone show.
