Austria's David Gleirscher struggled to make the Olympic team, but is now the men's luge gold medalist.

Chris Mazdzer won a silver medal in the luge singles at the Winter Olympics on Sunday in Pyeongchang, South Korea, becoming the first USA man to earn a medal in the event.

There aren't many Olympic events that the United States hasn't medaled in.

American Chris Mazdzer came into the Olympics in shocking form, finishing 18th in the overall World Cup standings and admitting that his form had deserted him. Mazdzer finished both the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games in 13th place.

Erin Hamlin did it four years ago when she won bronze in women's singles luge. It was on his third run that Mazdzer really clinched his medal. In fifth place after Run 1, he had the second fastest run of all competitors on Run 2 to jump into fourth place - and he was only 0.001 second behind Roman Repilov, an Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation. But everything fell apart in the final run as Loch looked a shell of his self, unable to control his line down the hill.

German Felix Loch, who has won three consecutive gold medals, was in first in the last run but hit the wall and ended up fifth.

Before Sunday, the highest an American had finished in the singles luge was fourth place.

"Hi everyone this is USA luge racer Chris Mazdzer ok bye", Buzzfeed reporter David Muck brought Mazbdzer's good looks to the internet's attention on Saturday.
