Facebook Takes Out Newspaper Ads To Apologize For Cambridge Analytica Scandal

Still reeling from the revelation that Cambridge Analytica stealthily acquired information about millions of Facebook users as part of a broader effort to help Donald Trump win the presidential election, Facebook has been busy reassuring users that it does, in fact, care about user privacy. If Facebook was slow to respond, its share price - down 14% this month - was not.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg after admitting "mistakes" by social media giant over the Cambridge Analytica scandal, had on Sunday took out full-page ads in nearly all of Britain's national newspapers; apologising for "breach of trust". It did not, however much liberals would love to overturn the result.

Zuckerberg explained there was a quiz developed by a researcher at the University of Cambridge "that leaked Facebook data of millions of people in 2014".

The advert also says that Facebook is investigating every app that has had access to data, as it believes there have been further privacy breaches.

For instance, if the "news" item I am seeing on my Facebook page allows me to know (by a keyboard shortcut or right mouse-click?), that Cambridge Analytica is the origin of the news item and that the Republican National Committee is the payor of Cambridge Analytica for sending me that "news" or advertisement, then I would be quickly empowered to evaluate that information more critically.

"We have a responsibility to protect your information", Zuckerberg said.

It later adds: We expect there are others.

A Reuters/Ipsos online poll released Sunday found that 41% of Americans trust Facebook to obey laws that protect their personal information, compared with 66% who said they trust Amazon, 62% who trust Alphabet's Google and 60% for Microsoft.

Developers will receive only a user's name, profile photo, and email address when someone signs in through Facebook, with more detailed information that includes their posts available only after getting permission from Facebook, Zuckerberg said. "And when we find them, we will ban them and tell everyone affected". "I promise to do better for you".

The letter does not significantly differ from a statement published on Mr Zuckerberg's Facebook page, shortly before he said he was "open" to testifying before Congress in the US.
