For Holocaust Remembrance Day 2018, Americans have joined people around the world in commemorating the murder of millions of Jews and other persecuted groups during the Second World War.

Thirty-one percent of all adults and 41 percent of millennials believe two million Jews or fewer were killed during the Holocaust. Ninety-three percent said they think all students should learn about the Holocaust in school, and 80 percent said it is important to continue Holocaust education so a similar atrocity does not occur in the future.

Rivlin and Duda on Thursday led the March of the Living, an annual educational event held at Auschwitz-Birkenau marking Yom HaShoah, Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day, dedicated to the six million Jews killed by German Nazis during World War II.

Auschwitz-Birkenau has become a symbol of Nazi Germany's genocide of European Jews, one million of whom were killed at the camp between 1940 to 1945.

A new, comprehensive national survey of Holocaust awareness and knowledge among adults in the United States, released on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day by Schoen Consulting on behalf of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference), found that more than half of Americans believe that the Holocaust could happen again.

Here's another alarming result of the survey: nearly half of US Adults (45%) and Millennials (49%) can not name even one of the more than 40,000 concentration camps and ghettos in Europe during the Holocaust, and more than 4-in-10 (41%) did not know what Auschwitz was. Among the notable results, the study found that over one-fifth (22%) of young Americans have never heard about the Holocaust or were unsure what it was.

The survey, conducted by Shoen Consulting on behalf of The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) found that 11 percent of US adults and 22 percent of millennials "haven't heard" or "are not sure if they have heard of the Holocaust".

Further, large numbers of respondents believe that there is anti-Semitism in the US today (68 percent) and that there are many neo-Nazis in the USA (34 percent). "There is no doubt that many Poles fought against the Nazi regime, but we can not deny the fact that Poland and Poles lent a hand to the annihilation" of Jews during the Holocaust, Rivlin said.

"This study underscores the importance of Holocaust education in our schools", Greg Schneider, Executive Vice President of the Claims Conference, said in a statement. Only 37 percent of people were able to identify Poland as a country where the Holocaust occurred, even though at least 3 million Jewish citizens of Poland were murdered during WWII.

Claims Conference President Julius Berman expressed concern about the lack of knowledge about the Holocaust among millennials.
