Apple iPhone Pursues Touchless Control & Curved Screens For Future Models

Unlike the display on the Samsung Galaxy S9, this new iPhone's display will curve from inwards from top to bottom (kind of like a banana).

Until now, every iPhone model released has featured a flat screen.

OLED, or organic light emitting diode, displays can be shaped into curves or even folded, unlike the less-flexible LCD screen technology used in prior iPhones.

The sources say the tech won't be ready for "at least two years" and there's still a chance Apple may not follow through on the current R&D work.

An Apple spokesperson has declined to comment on the leaked information regarding Apple's two new projects.

People familiar with Apple's plans told Bloomberg Technology Wednesday that the Cupertino giant is developing curved iPhone displays and a new type of technology that would make it possible for users to control an iPhone with touchless gestures. It would take into account the proximity of a finger to the panel and be built directly into the display.

In its report, Bloomberg notes that both features are only in an experimental phase and that they may not necessarily come to new iPhones.

Samsung launched a feature called Air Gestures several years ago that lets users accept calls and flip through web pages by waving their hand across the top of the phone. In an attempt to leave their competitors in the dust, Apple is working on new technology that will make iPhone's absolutely irresistible. Apple's implementation does not require a motion sensor though.

If you didn't think the iPhone X was a substantial enough shift in terms of design, it looks like Apple has a more significant revamp in store.
