Lawmakers from across the political spectrum led tributes to former first lady Barbara Bush Sunday after a spokesman announced the 92-year-old was in "failing health". Bush has made a decision to stop seeking additional medical attention and instead will seek comfort care at home.

As reported, Barbara Bush is the 37th First Lady of the United States when her husband, George H.W. Bush, was President.

The spokesman said Bush is "surrounded by a family she adores" and appreciates the messages and prayers she's received. Here are some things to know about her: LITERACY EFFORTS The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy began during her White House years, with a goal to improve the lives of disadvantaged Americans by boosting literacy among parents and their children.

Her husband, at 93, is the longest-lived USA president.

"Barbara and I are so sorry we can't be there for your inauguration on January 20th". Asked in 2010 about former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin - who sought the vice presidency in 2008 - Mrs. "Mrs. Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital this morning as a precaution after experiencing fatigue and coughing", a Bush family spokesperson said at that time.

The beloved Bush family matriarch has had bouts of medical trouble in the past, when both she and her husband, the former president, were hospitalized.

"I have had great medical care and more operations than you would believe", she told the magazine.

"I'm not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts!" she joked.

Barbara Bush served as the country's first lady from 1989 to 1993.

The source said she is being cared for at her home in Houston and has decided she does not want to go back into the hospital. Barbara Pierce was born in NY and met her future husband at age 16.

They traveled to Texas where the oil business dominated, first in Midland-Odessa, later to the Houston area where George found his love for politics.
