Doctors criticize court refusal to allow Alfie Evans to go to Italy

Doctors say the 23-month-old boy suffers from a degenerative neurological condition that has left him in a "semi-vegetative state" with nearly no brain function.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert tweeted her support for the family of Alfie Evans, the British infant ordered to be taken off life support despite his family's wishes for him to be treated in Italy.

In a statement on behalf of himself and Alfie's mother, Kate James, Mr Evans said: "Our lives have been turned upside down by the intense focus on Alfie and his situation".

Alfie's Army protesters also launched a march in London but were stopped halfway through as Tom Evans made a self-declared final public statement asking the protesters to stand down.

A doctor treating Alfie told reporters off the record his parents can't take Alfie home to die unless there is a "sea change" in their attitude. It's a misdiagnosis. It's not a miracle, it's a misdiagnosis.

The parents of Alfie Evans have pledged to work alongside doctors to give him "the dignity and comfort he needs".

A vigil for the seriously ill Liverpool toddler, Alfie Evans, took place today at the Guildhall Square.

The Catholic Association then released a statement on Thursday criticizing Catholic leadership in the United Kingdom for siding with the courts.

Alfie's plight has received considerable worldwide media attention in recent days, especially in Italy and the United States.

Although the boy had been breathing since his life support was removed, judges in the case sided with doctors who said his undiagnosed degenerative condition had "entirely wiped out" his brain matter - leaving the toddler with no chance of recovery.

"As I sit next to Alfie's bedside, every second of every day, it encourages me more and more that he will live for "x" amount of months, possibly years".

Alfie's tragic case captured the hearts of people the world over, with millions coming out to support him online.

The letter continued: "Actions such as these have now brought the Alder Hey (Children's) Hospital to worldwide attention and, by extension, bring our whole profession into disrepute".

Their most recent High Court legal battle challenged that initial decision, but to no avail.

"Our staff have received in person, via phone calls, email, and through social media channels a barrage of highly abusive and threatening language and behaviour that has shocked us all", it said.

Alfie's family have been given permission to have him go to Italy by the Italian government.

"Medical tyranny must stop", it said.

Tom previously threatened to begin private prosecution of doctors involved in Alfie's case, in the event of Alfie's death, for alleged conspiracy to murder.
