Seven inmates died in what prison officials said was a "gang-related" brawl that began Sunday night and lasted into Monday morning in three dorms at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville.
No additional details were immediately provided on the cause of the incident at the prison.
"The folks who are incarcerated are gonna continue their criminal ways behind bars, which is not only unsafe inside our institutions, but it's also risky outside our institutions", Stirling said. "They always want to bring up the cell phones and the contraband, there's other contraband in here besides cell phones - there's drugs, there's cigarettes".
All SCDC staff and responding law enforcement officers are safe and accounted for.
Department of Corrections Director Bryan Stirling said at a news conference Monday that 44 officers were working at Lee when the violence started shortly after 7:15 p.m. Sunday.
Lee County Sheriff's Office also responded to the incident.
The Lee County Fire Department tweeted out photos of multiple crews at Lee Correctional Institution. The 17 inmates injured during the incident are still being treated.
