So, if you see a name that you think you've heard before, you probably have.

Hurricane Irma's Category 5 winds of almost 180 miles per hour leveled buildings and vegetation in the Leeward Islands in early September, then ended with a destructive combination of waves, storm surge, rain and tornadoes across Florida.

The meteorological organisation retired the four names from its rotating list used for hurricanes and tropical storms in light of the death and destruction the storms caused past year.

The retired names will be replaced by Harold, Idalia, Margot and Nigel and will make their debut during the 2023 hurricane season.

With these four additions, a total of 86 names have been retired from the Atlantic basin list since 1953.

On Thursday, a committee of the World Meteorological Organization chose to replace those names with Harold, Idalia, Margot and Nigel when the list is recycled in 2023.

"Given the exceptional nature of the 2017 season, the WMO RAIV Hurricane Committee is scheduled for five rather than the traditional four days".

The agency noted that 2017 Atlantic season was both extremely active and one of the most destructive on record. A full review of the 2017 season can be found here.

Hurricane Harvey became a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale before making landfall along the middle Texas coast on August 25. Harvey is the second costliest hurricane in USA history (after inflation), behind only Katrina in 2005. Irma came ashore in southwest Florida as a Category 4 hurricane.

Hurricane Irma, which peaked as a Category 5 hurricane, made landfall seven times and hit islands in the northern Caribbean and Florida in early September. Irma caused 44 deaths and 85 indirect deaths in the Caribbean and Florida. In the USA, seven direct deaths were reported, and an additional 85 indirect deaths occurred, 80 of which were in Florida. These advantages are especially important in exchanging detailed storm information between hundreds of widely scattered stations, coastal bases, and ships at sea. It's the third costliest hurricane in US history. "Maria caused 31 direct deaths with 34 missing in Dominica, and two direct deaths in Guadeloupe", says NOAA. In Puerto Rico, the death toll stands at 65, which includes an unknown number of indirect deaths.

Hurricane Nate didn't make landfall in the USA but slammed into Nicaragua and Panama as a Category 1, causing 44 deaths.

Hurricane Nate killed 45 people in Central America. An additional nine people were missing in the region.
