"Bittersweet WIN for #Seb5 and for the Scuderia, great performance but we are all waiting for the medical bulletin for our mechanic #BahrainGP", Ferrari tweeted at the end of the race.

Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly celebrated a superb fourth place to take away 12 points.

Hamilton expertly jumped up three places, passing Sebastian Ocon (Force India), Fernando Alonso (McLaren) and Nico Hulkenberg (Renault).

It also made the 30-year-old, who won in Melbourne two weeks ago, the first Ferrari driver since compatriot Michael Schumacher in 2004 to win the first two races of a season.

Raikkonen was forced to retire from the race following an issue with his rear left tyre.

Bottas said: "We were on the harder compound and I knew there was a chance".

In the lead, Hamilton was 5.3 seconds clear of Vettel after 22 laps, an advantage trimmed to half a second by lap 25 with Bottas five seconds adrift in third.

"It's disappointing, but I think what is positive is that actually the race pace we had was more competent and we could put a bit more pressure on them than we expected to".

His team-mate Sergio Perez, and Brendon Hartley were both given 30-second penalties after the race for a mix-up on the formation lap, relegating them from P12 and P13 respectively to the bottom of the standings.

As Mercedes duo Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton began to close in on him in the closing laps, Vettel took over the radio to give the false impression to Mercedes that his tires were in fine condition.

Vettel now has a 17-point lead over Hamilton after two of 21 races this season. But with Mercedes leaning towards a one-stopper and Ferrari seeming to be two-stopping, the playing field was a lot more even than it looked.

Raikkonen got passed on the first corner by Bottas, but Vettel held his ground.

Verstappen suffered a rear-left puncture after making contact with Hamilton as he tried to pass the Briton, and limped back to the pits.

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel celebrated his 200th career start by winning the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix today.

Mercedes reacted by switching Bottas to a one-stop on lap 21, taking on medium tyres that he planned to run to the end of the race.
