Investigators Dig for Evidence in Accused Golden State Killer's Backyard

Report: Suspected 'Golden State Killer,' 'East Area Rapist' arrested after eluding authorities for decades Suspect in Golden State Killer case was a recluse, neighbors say

It was not immediately clear from which site investigators obtained the DNA profile, and the Sacramento District Attorney's Office declined to provide any more information about where or how investigators got it.

After DNA results from original crime scene samples positively matched DeAngelo, authorities gathered a second one to bolster their case.

On Thursday, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Grippi confirmed reports that investigators used DNA collected from one of the crime scenes decades ago and compared it to genetic profiles on genealogical websites.

The process investigators took to identify DeAngelo was first reported by the Sacramento Bee.

Scientists then compare the DNA to those they already have on record in hopes of connecting them with unknown branches of their family tree.

"We found a person that was the right age and lived in this area - and that was Mr. DeAngelo", Grippi said.

He did not address whether the websites volunteered the information or were subject to a search warrant or subpoena.

A notorious decades-old mystery over the identity of the "Golden State Killer", believed to have carried out dozens of rapes and multiple murders in California in the 1970s and 1980s, may finally be solved: a suspect has reportedly been arrested.

A local and federal task force arrested DeAngelo late Tuesday evening, after linking him to 12 slayings, 45 rapes and more than 120 residential burglaries in a trail that stretched south from Sacramento to Orange County.

On Thursday, sheriff's detectives and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents spent hours combing through his modest single-storey house in Citrus Heights, a Sacramento suburb, and probing the backyard with poles for signs of digging. Investigators haven't disclosed many key elements about how and why they took this very unusual step to find a suspect. Authorities have said some of the alleged crimes of the Golden State Killer overlapped with DeAngelo's time as a police officer.

Both said Thursday they did not receive a court order in the DeAngelo case and were not otherwise involved.

"It just felt like he wanted to be left alone", Sanchietti said of his neighbour, who he said had a reputation in the community for loud, angry outbursts.

"We have had a handful of inquiries over the years, and have never given customer information to law enforcement officials", he said.
