Milos Forman, Oscar-Winning director of "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest", has died.

Forman died about 2 a.m. Saturday at Danbury Hospital, near his home in Warren, Connecticut, according to a statement released by the former director's agent, Dennis Aspland.

He received a third Oscar nomination for his 1996 film, "The People vs. Larry Flynt", a raucous and randy account of the First Amendment battles of Hustler magazines publisher Larry Flynt, who was played by Woody Harrelson.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), adapted from Ken Kesey's 1962 novel, dealt with life inside an OR mental institution.

The film, which starred Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher, won five Oscars, including best picture and best director and went on to become the second film in history to win the top five Academy Award categories.

"I was used to seeing the Russian and Czech films about composers, and they were the most boring films", he said.

American writer-producer Larry Karaszewski, who made two films (including "Larry Flynt") with Forman, said the filmmaker was "our friend and our teacher". Forman was born in Caslav, Czech Republic, in 1932. Both of Forman's parents were killed in Nazi concentration camps.

Forman directed almost two dozen films in his career, but he enjoyed his greatest critical and commercial success during the '70s and '80s. A veiled criticism of his country's bureaucracy, it did not amuse the politicians, and it was banned from theaters following the Soviet invasion in August 1968.

Hunting for locations, Forman realized Prague was the only European capital that had changed little since Mozart's time, but returning there initially filled him with dread.

At the time, Forman was in Paris, in negotiations for Taking Off, a US production about the youth protest movement.

His other notable films include Hair (1979), Ragtime (1981) and Valmont (1989). He also wrote and acted in several of his movies.

Man on the Moon, based on the life of cult hero Andy Kaufman, did win its star, Jim Carrey, a Golden Globe.
