The district is arming each of its 500 teachers with a 16-inch bat following an in-service training day that taught teachers how to respond in a school shooting, WSEE-TV reported.

"It is the last resort", said Millcreek School District Superintendent William Hall.

"People have their own opinions of things, and we understand that, and as long as we are continuing to talk about it, I still think it's good", Hall said. It said "the parties wish to resolve the issues between them in a mutually agreeable manner, without expending the time and expense of conducting a formal disciplinary hearing".

A supporter of the idea, Millcreek Education Association president Jon Cacchione, told CBS, "This is a tool to have in the event we have nothing else". In a statement released April 3, Hall told parents that the school district has revised a "TROJAN" response procedure that involves running, hiding or fighting against a threat.

School districts in Florida meanwhile are mulling whether or not to arm certain school staff members in wake of the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The three-day candidate filing window began on Wednesday and comes as a statewide teacher walkout over school funding continues in its second week.

Another Pennsylvania district made news last month when it announced that it is arming students with rocks as protection against the possibility of a school shooter.

A school in Pennsylvania district is giving its teachers baseball bats as a mean to fight school shooter instead of "hiding and waiting".

"We weren't at the time seriously looking at that, but we were wanting to gauge how our community felt about having a non-SRO gun presence", Hall said. Carol says, "I had wanted to implement this type of system for quite some time, and being part of the Dynamic Learning Project provided the push I needed as well as the support". "But we're not really actively planning that right now".

An online question asked if the district had a policy on metal detectors at schools, and Miller said studies have shown that for schools of a size similar to North Penn, metal detectors could add up to two hours to the time it takes students to enter, before considering the costs of staff to monitor and maintain them.

Oklahoma Republican Gov. Mary Fallin approved teacher pay raises of about $6,100, but many educators say that's not enough because classrooms still need more money.
