Print companies reveal gender pay gap data

Deadline day: Latecomers to gender pay gap in reporting scramble to meet today's deadline Apple pays its female staff up to 26% less than men in the UK

By Wednesday an estimated 9,000 companies and public bodies with 250 employees or more must have submitted their median and mean gender pay gap data to the Government Equalities Office.

UEL chair of governors, Geoff Thompson MBE said: "We are very encouraged by the results of our equal pay audit, which shows that the gender pay gap at the University of East London has reduced and is heading in the right direction".

In both Gwent and North Wales Police, women were paid 17.3% less than men.

Companies who do not provide their figures will face legal action including court orders and fines, but only after a month-long grace period.

"Gender pay gap reporting ... forces employers to look at themselves and understand their organizations and it prompts employees to ask some hard questions", said Smethers.

Today is the first gender pay gap reporting deadline.

When discussing the gender pay gap it's important to realise that we're not talking about men and women being paid differently for doing exactly the same role.

"Like all airlines, our gender pay in the United Kingdom is materially affected by the relatively low numbers of female pilots in the aviation industry", Ryanair said in a statement.

On a mean basis, the gap in average hourly pay was 8.4%, and 41.4% when looking at bonuses alone.

The national median gender pay gap is 18.4%. Among major global companies, Unilever (UL), Toyota (TM), Mars and BP (BP) reported that women in specific divisions were paid more than their male colleagues. This matches the mean national pay gap pay, and is only 1 per cent better than the median national pay gap.

The BBC said in January that it would be more transparent about what it pays its correspondents, and offer salaries in narrower bands.

Globally the trend is similar, with men earning more in wages, prize money and sponsorship.

She added: "Flexible working is still not as widely available as it needs to be, together with pay structures which do not disadvantage part time workers - women or men".

THE Independent has refused to publish details of the news site's gender pay gap figures ahead of tonight's midnight deadline. Executive ranks are also dominated by men. You can see from the breakdown that the most severe pay disparity occurs in Apple (UK) Ltd, which is distinct from its chain of shops, Apple Retail UK Ltd.

Highfield and the board are now addressing the gender imbalances the report has highlighted by setting up a Gender Pay Review Group to tackle the pay discrepancies. Typically the median is the more representative figure, because the mean can be skewed by a handful of highly paid employees.

Finally, you need to create an action plan off the back of this analysis - this is not now mandatory but Fawcett has argued that it should be, and we urge all employers to set out what they intend to do to close the gap.

"We are committed to increasing the representation of women at all levels".
