Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Director General Ahmet Uzumcu speaks during a news conference in The Hague, Netherlands, October 9, 2013.

In the meantime, the Russian military have found a laboratory operated by militants in central Douma, which the military says was used to produce chemical weapons.

"We will not indulge the authors of these fake reports", Zakharova added, explaining that the Russian side "does its part of the work in a very responsible, professional and reliable manner".

The Kremlin dismissed the claims.

Moscow blamed the delay on the air strikes, in which the United States, France and Britain targeted what the Pentagon said were three chemical weapons facilities.

British Royal Air Force jets joined American and French warplanes and ships in hitting targets in Syria on early Saturday in response to a reported chemical attack by the Syrian government in the town of Douma.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said teaming up with France and the United States to destroy suspected chemical weapons bases had risked making the situation in the war-torn country worse.

May told legislators in the House of Commons that seeking their approval would have been impractical, both because the parliament was on a spring break until Monday and because some of the intelligence behind the decision was classified.

Jaafari stressed that the "Syrian government did all that it can do to facilitate the work of this mission" but that it was up to the United Nations and the OPCW to decide whether to deploy, based on security considerations.

On Monday, an array of western mainstream media came out with strikingly similar headlines as they all accused Moscow of "blocking" the OPCW experts from entering Douma.

Less than two days later, the Army of Islam rebels surrendered the town, which was the last stronghold in the once rebellious eastern Ghouta region at the doorstep of Damascus.

Doctors at the hospital where suspected victims were treated told reporters on the tour that none of the patients that night had suffered chemical weapons injuries - they were asphyxiated by dust and smoke in a bombardment.

The purported chemical incident in Douma allegedly took place on April 7. "Suffocation cases arrived as a result of the debris, dust, fire and smoke".

Meanwhile, the French Foreign Ministry, in a statement, accused the Syrian government and Russian Federation of deliberately barring the OPCW from entering Douma in the past few days so that the evidence of the suspected gas attack disappeared without a trace. Several said a unusual smell started spreading and people screamed, "It's chlorine!"
