The Canadian police have identified the remains of a Sri Lankan man they believe is a possible victim of suspected serial killer Bruce McArthur.

Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga said the self-employed landscaper was charged in the death of 37-year-old Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam, who moved to Canada from Sri Lanka in 2010 and was never reported missing.

Last month, Toronto police released a photo of a bearded man who they believed was a deceased victim of McArthur and asked for help identifying him.

Idsinga said they had no evidence that Kanagaratnam had any links to the city's LGBTQ neighbourhood, unlike all seven other victims.

Toronto Police released a picture of the unknown male last month and were later able to identify him through an worldwide agency.

"He doesn't quite fit the profile that we've seen before", said Idsinga. Later that month, he was charged with the murders of Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, and Dean Lisowick.

The remains of all the victims identified so far were found in planters located on the property of one of McArthur's clients.

The Post reported in March that McArthur, according to source close to the investigation, changed his pattern when it came to targeting potential victims after being interviewed as a witness in the disappearance of Skandaraj Navaratnam - a man who would later be identified as a victim.

McArthur was arrested in January and charged with the murders of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen, who went missing from Toronto's gay village in 2017.

There was a large wave of Tamil asylum seekers from Sri Lanka that arrived in Canada in 2009 and 2010 in the aftermath of the brutal military operations that ended a 25-year civil war.

"We have lots of searches left to do as the weather gets warmer", Idsinga said.

Kayhan's remains have not yet been found.

Police believe Kanagaratnam was killed between September 3 and December 14, 2015.

The sprawling police investigation, which Idsinga has previously described as unprecedented in size and scope, is now also scrutinizing 15 unsolved homicides that took place between 1975 and 1997.
