The raid on Cohen was not carried out by special counsel Robert Mueller's team.

But Trump was now raging about what he called abuse of attorney-client privilege after feds raided Cohen.

On Monday, the president again blasted Mueller's investigation as "a disgrace" and called the FBI raid of Cohen's office "a whole new level of unfairness".

Third, while attorney-client privilege shields many forms of communication between a lawyer and his or her client, it doesn't shield everything.

A subpoena was also served to the Trump Organisation for information related to a payment to Daniels for her silence, the person said. Trump has said he didn't know about the payment.

Search warrants are a fairly standard, though aggressive, law enforcement tool and are often sought in cases where authorities are concerned someone may hide or withhold evidence. A raid on a lawyer's office doesn't happen every day; it means that multiple government officials, and a federal judge, had reason to believe they'd find evidence of a crime there and that they didn't trust the lawyer not to destroy that evidence.

Prosecutors from the Southern District came to the criminal division at the Justice Department in Washington to sign off on the warrants, as required by the US Attorney's Manual, according to the source, and Rosenstein was made aware of the warrants before they were executed Monday. Cohen is a street-wise New Yorker with a penchant for confrontation and a cultivated reputation as Trump's outside-the-courtroom problem-solver.

In this case, Mueller opted to refer the matter to federal prosecutors in Manhattan.

But the president's ire has been directed at Mueller and his boss, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The President perceives a marauding special counsel, an Federal Bureau of Investigation plot to persecute him and a conspiracy within his own government to unfairly pry deep into his personal confidences held by a cherished confidant and personal attorney.

"It's an attack on what we all stand for", Trump told reporters at the White House. The New York Times first reported Monday's raid.

The unusual step of searching the office was partly instigated by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading an inquiry into allegations that Mr Trump's team colluded with Russian Federation to help him win the election.

In addition to looking for information about Stormy Daniels, investigators are searching for records about an alleged $150,000 payment made to Karen McDougal, a Playboy bunny who is linked to Trump as well.

President Donald Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen departs following a closed door meeting with the Senate Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill, Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, in Washington.

Watchdog groups, including Common Cause, had lodged complaints with Justice Department and the Federal Election Commission about the Daniels' payment months before Avenatti's lawsuit.

At this point, dismissing Mueller wouldn't end the investigations encircling the President anyway.

For more than a decade, Michael Cohen has been President Donald Trump's private attorney - and so much more. An administration official said the White House would largely defer to outside surrogates to push back on Comey, but there was concern as to how the director's interviews could rile up the president. "Cohen would not be a subject or target that Trump would wish to have flipped against him".

A spokesperson for the Trump Organization declined to confirm to The Journal that prosecutors had requested the Daniels documents.

The raid also suggests that the federal prosecutors in NY weren't confident that Cohen would preserve or hand over the evidence they sought. Documents are not privileged simply because they passed through an attorney's hands.

And if Trump did know, then he and Cohen may have worked together to break the law. In the email, the representative said funds had been deposited in Cohen's account.

On Monday, the firm said in a statement that its relationship with Cohen had "reached its conclusion, mutually and in accordance with the terms of the agreement".

We wonder: Will Cohen be fired next?
