Turkey to hold snap elections on 24 June, says Erdoğan

Today, following his meeting with Bahceli, President Erdogan said the snap parliamentary elections will be held in Turkey on June 24, 2018.

Erdoğan announced the snap polls after a meeting with Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chairman Devlet Bahçeli at the presidential complex in Ankara, a day after the latter called for snap elections to be held in August.

The parliamentary and presidential polls had previously been slated for November 3, 2019.

He prompted the 2002 snap polls that brought Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) to power.

Investor concerns about double-digit inflation and Erdogan's pressure on the central bank to keep rates down have sent the lira to a series of record lows. "On June 24, 2018 a new era is starting".

The presidential and parliamentary elections will take place under a state of emergency that has been in place since an attempted coup in July 2016. "The Supreme Electoral Council will immediately start preparations for them", Erdogan told reporters.

The TRY, meanwhile, extended its gains after Erdogan's announcement.

The polls will be the first since a referendum previous year that transformed Turkey's parliamentary democracy into a powerful executive presidency and will hand the president sweeping new powers after the elections.

"The state of emergency needs to be lifted immediately, there can not be an election under emergency rule".

The broad crackdown permitted by the emergency powers has polarised Turkish society.

The main opposition CHP party, the Republican People's Party, is expected to run alone but has not named a presidential candidate as of yet. Wide-ranging purges have have led to the imprisonment of tens of thousands of people, including journalists-Turkey is now known as the world's biggest jailer of journalists.

"Our analysis shows that the country (Turkey) continues to take huge strides away from the European Union, in particular in the areas of rule of law and fundamental rights" said European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn.
