Students Plan To Walk Out Of Class On Columbine Shooting Anniversary Sheriff: Shooting of Florida high school student 'intentional'

It also was coordinated with the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, where 12 students and one teacher were fatally shot.

About 30 students gathered for about 15 minutes to hear a speech by organizer and KHS senior Mitchell Wiltzius, listen to a list of names of the Columbine victims and observe a moment of silence for them, write "Enough is Enough" in chalk on the school sidewalk, and pass out voter registration forms to those old enough to vote.

"There was no reason why I should be that scared at my school, where I'm supposed to be able to feel safe", she said. "I am marching for Breanna Bradford and I'm marching for everyone else who has lost their life to gun violence or any violence", said Edison High School Sophomore Georgia Foster.

Kingsford High School senior Mitchell Wiltzius, second from right, addresses his fellow students during a walkout Friday morning outside the school. Both invited the chanting group of students into their board room.

The protest on Friday was billed as the National School Walkout and was organized in part by 16-year-old Arielle Geismar, a junior at Beacon High School in New York City.

West Lafayette Junior/Senior High School held a protest in light of the shooting which occured 19 years ago.

Principal Scott Christy said in a letter to other schools in his district that April "has always been a time to respectfully remember our loss, and also support efforts to make our communities a better place".

Student organizer Jordan Harb criticized the armed protesters as students ate pizza on the Senate lawn and prepared for orchestrated "die-ins" at the Capitol. Police say one person was injured and the suspect is in custody.

The 11th-grader at the Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts carried a sign that said, "We will march until we disarm every American".

"We can go out and protest and we can do all of these sorts of things, but if we do not put pressure on our legislators, the people who have control over our city and state and national governments, then how is there going to be policy change?" Students took the stage to issue an ultimatum to their lawmakers.

An ABC News/Washington Post poll published Friday showed that support for a ban on assault weapons has risen sharply in the past few months.

Schools from across the United States participated in the walkout.

While the members of the Utah Legislature's minority party said they plan to work on the gun control measures sought by the students and others, they also urged action at the ballot box. "So it's good to be out here showing what we believe in and making sure students have the information they need to vote". We keep talking. We keep working. "And it makes them look bad and rather silly, because we're just playing music and having fun and they're here screaming at us that we're sheep".

Meanwhile, in CT, the students put up a sign on a fence by the football field that read, "Can't hear us now?"
