On Monday, 16 people were killed including around seven children following an air strike by the Saudi-led coalition in the area.

In a statement carried by Saudi media, the coalition said the oil tanker was in global waters when it came under "Houthi-Iranian attack".

The tanker continued on its route "after the rapid intervention of a coalition naval vessel", it said. European Union naval forces also confirmed the incident, saying there were no casualties.

Al-Malki said a coalition naval ship accompanied the oil tanker until it completed its navigation north. Pictures carried by state-run Saudi al-Ekhbariya TV showed a hole ripped through the side of the ship but no oil leaking out. It gave no further details.

A coalition spokesman said the alliance takes the report very seriously, promising a full investigation.

Tuesday's attack came one day after an airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition killed at least 14 people near Hodeida. Tehran and the Houthis deny the charge.

Today, the US government announced almost $87 million in additional humanitarian assistance for the people of Yemen at the Yemen High-Level Pledging Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland.

He said information gleaned by his new special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, during a trip to the region led him to believe there were "positive perspectives" that could possibly lead to an "effective intra-Yemeni dialogue" at some point.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates intervened in a civil war in Yemen in 2015 against the Houthis to restore the internationally recognised government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. The United Nations said that blockade raised the danger of mass starvation, and it was partially lifted. More could be on the way, if an additional $500 million that Saudi Arabia and the UAE have vowed to secure from neighboring countries materializes.

The Saudi-led coalition has been at war with the Iran-allied Houthis for more than three years, a conflict that has killed more than 10,000 Yemenis and devastated the Arab world's poorest country.
