Floodwater from a flower-farm dam that burst after days of torrential rain in Kenya's Rift Valley killed at least 24 people as it swept through 450 homes, the local governor said on Thursday.

The breach happened in the town of Solai, which is approximately 120 miles northwest of the capital of Nairobi, late on Wednesday.

"The water has caused huge destruction of both life and property".

Nakuru County Governor Lee Kinyanjui stated that his office will do its best to ensure those affected are taken to a safer place.

The Kenya Red Cross said it had saved 39 people so far as it continued rescue efforts.

The full extent of the damage isn't known yet.

Police chief Joseph Kioko said, "We have recovered... bodies and many people are missing".

The toll, the highest in a single flood-related incident now brings to 152 the number of people who have died countrywide as a result of floods since heavy rains started in March.

A disaster management team from the Nakuru County Government is also evacuating survivors to the Bahati Sub County and Nakuru Level Five hospitals. So far over 300 homes are confirmed to have been affected.

Recent flooding in the country has already killed more than 152 people and displaced a quarter of a million others.

"The county has dispatched ambulances to the scene to aid in evacuation of victims", he said.

The Red Cross reports that more than 260,000 Kenyans have been displaced by the rains, which came after a gruesome drought.
