Microsoft is looking to target a new market for its tablets, Bloombergreported, with sources saying the company will be launching a cheaper line of Surface tablets in the second half of the year.
Microsoft's new devices are expected to boast 10-inch screens, roughly the same size as the standard iPad and smaller than the 12-inch screens on the Surface Pro range. Microsoft's lack of success with the $499 Surface RT would result in the firm refocussing its hardware on the premium Surface Pro line. In comparison, Microsoft sold about 725,000 tablets in the same period.
The sixth generation iPad starts at $329. In-part the report covered the coming Microsoft Windows 10 on Qualcomm 2-in-1's launching shortly in an effort to attract students for a back to school effort to make the Surface tablet closer to the iPad by using an always-on ARM Snapdragon processor.
The devices will also be lighter than high-end models and will be equipped for up to four hours of battery life, while the Surface Pro lasts for 13.5 hours on a single charge. In reality, though, people don't upgrade their tablet as often as their smartphone, so it's hard to figure out how many active devices each company has on the market.
There will also be less-expensive version of the company's keyboard cover, stylus and mouse. Like the Surface 3, the new 10-inch device won't come bundled with any accessories, with said accessories being priced lower than the current offerings. Prices will start at $400, with different storage for various models ranging from 64GB to 128GB. The tablets will still have the kickstand for upright typing and watching video.
Perhaps most importantly, there's no reason to fear an unlikely comeback of the universally loathed Windows RT platform, with the full 10 Pro experience to be offered on a tighter than usual budget.
