The Times reported that Nielsen had drafted a resignation letter but not submitted it. CBS News political correspondent Ed O'Keefe noted Thursday that Nielsen would not be the first Trump administration official to express a desire to leave after being berated by Mr. Trump either by colleagues or in the Oval Office.

Trump reportedly railed against Nielsen on Wednesday, saying that she failed to adequately secure the U.S. border, former officials with knowledge of the incident said to The Times.

In recent months, the southern border has been inundated with illegal immigration and Central American asylum-seekers who traveled with a caravan, taunting President Trump's DHS along the way.

"The president is committed to fixing our broken immigration system and our porous borders". The president lashed out at other Cabinet members at the White House meeting as well, but the source said Trump's harshest comments were directed at Nielsen.

Trump won the 2016 election largely on his promise to crack down on illegal immigration and build a wall that would totally shut down the flow of immigrants.

In fact, this week Nielsen defended the agency's so-called "zero tolerance" policy on NPR, saying undocumented immigrants shouldn't be treated differently than US citizens-even when their kids.

Nielsen also released a statement in wake of the incident where she said she shared the president's frustrations but didn't exactly deny the fact she penned her resignation.

One person at the meeting said Trump railed at the whole Cabinet over what he said was its lack of progress in keeping out illegal immigrants, the Times said. "These are complex issues and I will continue to direct the Department to do all we can to implement the President's security-focused agenda".

Trump has also been frustrated with Nielsen, according to people familiar with the dynamic.

Illegal border crossings are up in 2018, after record lows previous year.

The secretary added, "Border security is the most basic and necessary responsibility of a sovereign nation".

Just to be clear, Nielsen and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under her direction haven't shown any hesitation about separating families.

Trump considers Nielsen as well as different DHS officers ' are resisting directives that parents are separated from their children when people cross illegally in the united states of america, to discourage them from entering, the newspaper stated, citing the officers. "She feels like she's doing the best she can and doing a good job on immigration, but she also has to follow the law", one source told the Post.

Trump, who has grown increasingly frustrated by a spike in border apprehensions and legal setbacks, blamed Nielsen Wednesday for failing to do enough to stop them, according to people familiar with the exchange.

Kelly's concerns about "integration", critics say, give away the game of Trump's broader anti-immigrant vision.
