The White House unveiled a hands-off regulatory approach to foster the development of artificial intelligence (AI) at a gathering of more than 40 companies in Washington on Thursday.
The White House said on Thursday that it will create a new artificial intelligence (AI) advisory committee-dubbed the Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence-that will advise the White House on AI research and development efforts in government and industry.
Intel chief executive Brian Krzanich, who attended the meeting, called in a statement for a national AI strategy that would prioritise "government funding of R&D to augment the great work being done by industry, and the availability of government data for innovators to use in developing artificial intelligence capabilities". Many of them had been concerned that Trump's focus on jobs and traditional industries in earlier months of his presidency might signal his hostility toward automation technologies. It will be comprised of the most senior research and development officials across the U.S. government, tasked with looking at R&D priorities and better coordinating federal investments.
"In the private sector, we will not dictate what is researched and developed". The leaders of France and the United Kingdom have talked about making AI investments while also outlining concerns about developing the new technology with ethical guidelines.
The committee will be led by the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the National Science Foundation, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Today's summit convened expert AI researchers, industry leaders, and senior government officials to discuss policies to fully realize the promise of AI for the American people.

Dean Garfield, president of the Information Technology Industry Council trade group, told Bloomberg TV on Thursday that "jobs will change and where those jobs are may move".
He said it's also important to make it easier for startups to participate so that the technology - and the reams of online data it learns from - isn't tightly controlled by a small group of large companies.
Kratsios acknowledged that "to a certain degree, job displacement is inevitable".
A year ago, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin brushed aside concerns about AI displacing jobs, saying that prospect was so far in the future that "it's not even on my radar screen".
"Privacy, cybersecurity, ethics, and potential employment impact are all worthy of careful analysis", Krzanich said.
